Herons eighth, Young third at Buffalo State

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y.-- The William Smith College cross country team opened their season with an eighth place finish at the 2001 Daniel Walker Memorial Invitational hosted by Buffalo State.

Junior Amy Young (Hugh C. Williams/Canton, N.Y.) led the pack for most of the race, before finishing third with a 5k time of 18:35. First-year Molly Rider (Concord/Concord, N.H.) was the next Heron finisher with a time of 21:34. Rider was followed by senior Brooke Gordon (Manhasset/Port Washington, N.Y.) who posted 22:05 time. First-year Jennifer Davenport (Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.) ran a time of 22:44, while seniors Kerry Gannaway (Moses Brown/Providence, R.I.) and Kelly Hutchinson (Lawrenceville School/Jobstown, N.J.) recorded times of 22:55 and 23:11, respectively. Junior Lindsay Martin (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) rounded out the William Smith runners with a time of 25:01.

Of the seven schools that finished in front of the Herons, four were Division II and two were NAIA. SUNY-Geneseo was the only Division III school to finish in front of William Smith.

The Herons are back in action Sept. 8, at noon, when they travel to the Oswego Invitational.
