September 20, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College cross country team scored a low 47 points today to capture first-place of seven teams in the annual Hobart Invitational. The victory marks the first time the Herons have won an invitation meet, other than the annual Heron Invitational, as well as the only time the William Smith harriers have defeated Houghton College. Buffalo State took the runner-up spot with 59 points.

Senior Rachel Kaplan (Pingree School/Newbury, Mass.) paced the Herons, covering the 6k course in 23:32 for the third spot. First-year Karen Thorp (Yarmouth/Yarmouth, Maine) turned in a time of 23:35 for fourth place, while junior Molly Rider (Concord/Concord, N.H.) crossed the line eight seconds later in fifth.

First-year Jen Strong (Honeyoe/Honeyoe, N.Y.) finished the day in the 17th position with a time of 25:07, while classmate Leanne Roncolato (Meadville/Meadville, Pa.) came in right behind her in 25:12.

The Herons run again on Sept. 27, at the Fredonia Invitational. The gun is schedule to go off at 11 a.m.
