September 22, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College cross country team earned its first invitational victory in an event other than the Heron Invitational over the weekend, and the Herons top two runners were reward with kudos from the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association.

Senior Rachael Kaplan (Pingree School/Newbury, Mass.) was named the UCAA Performer of the Week and first-year Karen Thorp (Yarmouth/Yarmouth, Maine) was named the league’s Rookie of the Week. The pair finished third and fourth in the Hobart Invitational on Sept. 20, to lead William Smith to a 12-point victory over second place Buffalo State in the seven-team field. Kaplan covered the 6-kilometer, on-campus course in 23:32.55, less than 23 seconds behind the winner, while Thorp logged a time of 23:35.04.

A rookie herself, Kaplan ran her first collegiate cross country race just three weeks ago in the Buffalo State Invitational, and both of her previous races were 5k events.

The Herons return to action at 11 a.m., on Sept. 27, in the Fredonia State Invitational, before returning to run on the Hobart and William Smith campus in the UCAA Championships on Oct. 4.
