Thorp named UCAA Performer of the Week

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College first-year Karen Thorp (Yarmouth/Yarmouth, Maine) was named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Cross Country Performer of the Week for the week ending Sept. 28. This is the second league honor in as many weeks for Thorp, who was named the UCAA Rookie of the Week last week.
Thorp finished third in the Fredonia Invitational on Saturday, leading the Herons to a second place finish in four-team field. She covered the 5k course in 20:51, just eight seconds behind the winner. Throughout the race, runners were dogged by torrential rains.
The second place team showing is the highest away finish by the William Smith cross country team since Oct. 13, 2001, when the Herons took second in the St. Lawrence Invitational.
William Smith returns to action on Oct. 4, when it hosts the UCAA Championship Meet. The event is returning to Geneva for the first time since 1997. The starter’s pistol is scheduled to sound at noon.
