First-year Karen Thorp led William Smith in six of her eight races this season, including an 11th place finish at the UCAA Championship meet.

December 3, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College first-year Karen Thorp (Yarmouth/Yarmouth, Maine) recently was named to the All-UCAA Cross Country second team after taking 11th place at the UCAA Championship meet. The top seven runners across the line earned first-team honors, while the next seven grabbed second-team accolades.

Thorp had a strong rookie season, leading the Herons in six of the eight races in which she participated. She was selected as the UCAA Rookie of the Week after finishing fourth in the Hobart Invitational and earned Performer of the Week honors after a third place performance at the Fredonia Invitational. Thorp dropped seconds off her time throughout the year, posting her best 5k time of 19:54 at the Saratoga Invitational for 36th place out of 117 runners.

The 2003 season saw the Heron harriers win the Hobart Invitational, marking the first time the squad won an invite other than the Heron Invitational, as well as the first time in the program’s history the squad beat Houghton College.
