William Smith cross country earns academic honor

Karen Thorp

March 1, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—For the 11th consecutive season the William Smith College cross country team was named to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Squad. The Herons posted a 3.497 grade point average, ranking 33rd among the 99 qualifying schools.

William Smith had a solid season this past fall, winning the Hobart Invitational and taking second at the Fredonia State Invitational. The victory was the Herons’ first win at an invitational other than its own Heron Invitational.

First-year Karen Thorp (Yarmouth/Yarmouth, Maine) paced the team for much of the season. Her 11th place finish at the UCAA Championships earned All-UCAA second-team honors. Thorp turned in her fastest time of the year at the Saratoga Invitational, covering the 5k course in 19:54.

A team must post a cumulative grade point average of 3.1 in order to be named to the All-Academic Squad.
