William Smith hosts annual Heron Invitational

November 2, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith cross country team hosted its annual Heron Invitational this weekend, finishing in second place behind Clarkson with 37 points. Jadie Schoppmann of Potsdam crossed the line first with a 6k time of 22:58. Running in cold and tough conditions, the Herons missed winning their sixth consecutive Heron Invitational by only three points. Potsdam came in behind William Smith with 54 points, while Daemen did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score.

Sophomore Molly Rider (Concord/Concord, N.H.) led the way for the Herons once again, completing the course in 24:07 for the fourth spot out of 24 runners. Sophomore Jennifer Davenport (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.) came in 20 seconds later for the fifth spot. Running in a close pack of competitors senior Carolyn Suss (Horseheads/Pine Valley, N.Y.) crossed the finish line next for the Herons with a time of 24:53. Rounding out the top five William Smith harriers were first-years Kathryn Chabot (Keene/Keene, N.H.) and Breanna Greene (Hugh C. Williams/Canton, N.Y.) running the 6k course in 25:27 and 25:49, respectively.

The Herons will compete again on Nov. 9, at the ECAC Championships in Williamstown, Mass.
