September 18, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.-- William Smith College junior Amy Young (Hugh C. Williams/Canton, N.Y.) is the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association's Cross Country Performer of the Week. The junior helped the Herons to a fifth place finish at the Hobart and William Smith Invitational.

Young broke her own course record covering the 5k course in 18:23, 43 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. She lowered the campus course record by three seconds. The win was Young's second in as many races.

The Herons travel to the Houghton Invitational on Sept. 22, for an 11 a.m. start.

Hobart and William Smith Colleges are two private, coordinate institutions of higher learning in the liberal arts located along the western shore of Seneca Lake in Geneva, N.Y. Hobart College was founded in 1822 and currently enrolls 873 men. William Smith College for women was founded in 1908 and currently enrolls 955 women. The coordinate system allows the two colleges to share faculty and facilities and provide coeducational classes. However, each college awards its own degrees, has its own dean and admissions office, and maintains its own student government and athletics programs.
