5 Herons named to All-North Atlantic teams

GENEVA, N.Y.—Five William Smith field hockey players were named to the 2005 Dartfish/National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-North Atlantic teams. Seniors Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) and Amy Kuzio (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) and junior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) earned first-team honors, while junior Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine) and sophomore Skylar Beaver (Williamsville North/Williamsville, N.Y.) were second-team picks.

A forward, Dolan is a three-time first-team All-North Atlantic selection. She scored 21 goals and assisted on two others for 44 points this season, the fifth highest single season total in William Smith history. She ranked second in the Liberty League in goals and points behind Dennis. A three-year starter, Dolan finished her career with 42 goals and 18 assists for 102 points. She ranks eighth in career goals and 11th in career points.

A midfielder, Kuzio is making her second straight appearance on the All-North Atlantic teams and her first on the top squad. She represented the Herons in the annual North-South game over the weekend, playing for the North squad, which won 5-4. The three-time All-Liberty League honoree was second on the team and fourth in the conference in assists this season with 10. A four-year starter, Kuzio finished her career with eight goals and 24 assists for 40 points.

A forward, Dennis is a three-time All-North Atlantic pick, including back-to-back first-team selections. She led the Liberty League in goals (22), assists (13), and points (57) in 2005. Dennis’ points total is the second highest single season mark in Heron history. The 2005 Liberty League Player of the Year is William Smith’s career goals and points leader with 61 tallies and 25 helpers for 147 points. Dennis was a first-team All-American in 2004.

A midfielder, Saucier is a first time All-Region selection. She finished the season tied for fourth on the team in scoring with 16 points on five goals and six assists. Saucier scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the Herons 2-1 victory over Montclair State in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. A three-year starter and a two-time All-Liberty League selection, she has recorded 13 goals and 12 assists for 38 career points.

A defender, Beaver started all 21 games for William Smith this season. The Heron defense ranked second in the Liberty League in goals against average. Beaver tied for the team lead and tied for second in the conference with four defensive saves.

William Smith finished the season with a 17-4 overall record. The Herons finished atop the Liberty League regular season standings with their third consecutive unbeaten season (7-0) and won the conference tournament for the second year in a row. In the NCAA Tournament, William Smith advanced to the quarterfinal round.
