October 12 , 2005
GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith field hockey team had its 10-game winning streak stopped by Cortland State 3-1 this afternoon on McCooey Field. With the loss, the seventh-ranked Herons slip to 11-2, while the 10th-ranked Red Dragons improve to 11-1.
Cortland senior Becky Osier (Morrisville-Eaton/Morrisville, N.Y.) opened the scoring just 2:22 into the match. She caught a long pass in the center of the circle from junior Brit Paulus (Pleasantville/Pleasantville, N.Y.) and snapped off a quick shot for a 1-0 lead. The Red Dragons added a second tally just eight minutes later when Paulus finished a feed from junior Kelli Johnson (Iroquois/Elma, N.Y.).
William Smith halved its deficit with 10 minutes remaining in the first half when senior Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) ripped a running shot into the cage for her team-leading 13th goal of the season.
Cortland outshot the Herons 8-4 in the first half and carried a 2-1 lead into the break.
After the intermission, William Smith outshot the Red Dragons 8-3, but senior goalie Jessica Anderson (East Islip/East Islip, N.Y.) did not yield another goal. She finished with seven saves. Osier gave Cortland an insurance goal in the 67th minute to ice the win.
Senior goalie Sue Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine) made five saves for the Herons.
