GENEVA, N.Y.—The 10th-ranked William Smith field hockey team defeated 13th-ranked Lebanon Valley College this afternoon at McCooey Field. The win raises the Herons’ record to 11-2, while Lebanon Valley slips to 11-5.

William Smith dictated the pace of the game in the opening half, outshooting the visitors 6-1, but the teams headed into the break without budging the goose eggs on the scoreboard.

The Herons turned up the intensity after halftime, outshooting LVC 10-1 in the second stanza, but sophomore goalie Katie Pawlewicz (Holy Name/Reading, Pa.) kept her team in it with several spectacular stops, finishing with eight saves.

Thirteen proved to be a lucky number this afternoon for William Smith. On the Herons’ 11th penalty corner, junior back Lauren Fuller (Shaker/Loudonville, N.Y.) sent a screaming shot towards the lower left corner of the cage, but Pawlewicz made an incredible diving stop. Unfortunately for her, the deflection went right to William Smith sophomore Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.). Dennis batted in the rebound for her team-leading 13th goal of the season.

The Heron defense, back stopped by junior Sue Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine), was stifling all afternoon, allowing just two Lebanon Valley shots only one of which was on target. Jordan turned that offering aside to post her fifth shutout of the season.

William Smith returns to action at 4 p.m., on Oct. 22, at Liberty League rival Vassar.
