GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith senior Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) scored a pair of unassisted first half goals to lift the ninth-ranked Herons to a 2-1 victory over No. 4 and previously undefeated Skidmore College on McCooey Field this afternoon. The win gives William Smith a 10-1 overall record, 4-0 in the Liberty League, while the Thoroughbreds slip to 9-1, 3-1.

In a constant, biting, fall rain, things got off to a gloomy start for William Smith. Skidmore junior Katie Weber (Princeton Day School/Princeton, N.J.) staked the visitors to a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, taking a feed from sophomore Jessica Bergen (Granville/Wells, Vt.) and placing it in the lower right corner of the cage.

The Herons played from behind for about 11 minutes before senior Amy Kuzio (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) started a sequence that ended with the contest knotted at 1-1. She fired a shot in on the Thoroughbreds’ cage that would have gone in if not for a defensive save by senior back Sarah Berheide (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs, N.Y.). The rebound came right to Dolan, who swatted it into the cage.

The Herons grabbed the lead just seven second before halftime on a nearly identical sequence. This time Dolan started and finished the play, and senior back Alexis Sherman (Taylor Allderice/Pittsburgh, Pa.) made the defensive save on the first shot. The goal was Dolan’s team-leading 12th of the season.

William Smith controlled the flow of the contest in the first half, outshooting Skidmore 13-6, but the Thoroughbreds turned the table after the break, taking an 8-4 shot advantage. The difference was the play of senior goalie Sue Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine) and the rest of the Heron defense. Jordan posted four saves in the second stanza, including two in the final minute, while her defense blocked two other Skidmore offerings.

Both keepers turned in admirable performances. Jordan earned the win with seven saves, while first-year Stephanie Reed (Barker/Barker, N.Y.) finished the day with 10 stops.

William Smith returns to action at 2 p.m., on Oct. 8, when the Herons host Union College. The Dutchwomen (6-6, 2-2) lost a heart-breaking 2-1 decision at Rochester this afternoon.
