Elsenbeck lifts Saints to victory in overtime

September 18 , 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University junior Clinton Elsenbeckscored with 5:57 left in overtime to lift St. Lawrence to a 2-1 victory over Susquehanna University at the William Smith Field Hockey Invitational this afternoon on McCooey Field. The Saints improve to 3-2 overall, while the Crusaders drop to 2-2 for the year.

Having the better of play throughout much of the opening half, St. Lawrence got on the board first in the 36th minute when junior Liz Allison (Johnsburg/North Creek, N.Y.) connected on an Elsenbeck pass from the right side. The Saints held a 6-1 advantage on shots in the first session and took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Susquehanna came out of halftime and put heavy pressure on the St. Lawrence defense, peppering the Saints’ goal with six shots in the opening 10 minutes. Sophomore Ashley Rowell (Concord/Wilmington, Del.) finally broke through in the 45th minute with a shot from the middle of the circle to tie the game at one.

St. Lawrence regained the momentum following the goal but was unable to tally another score, forcing an overtime session. Neither team was able to generate many scoring chances in the early going. Putting the Crusader defense under pressure, senior Erin Lloyd (Corinth/Corinth, N.Y.) fired a shot towards the goal and found Elsenbeck at the back post for the game-winner in the 80th minute.

The Saints held a 15-8 advantage on shots and a 12-4 edge in penalty corners. Emilie Lannaman (Proctor Academy/Durham, N.H.) pulled in five saves for St. Lawrence, while Shannon Baker (Dover/Dover, Pa.) made eight stops for Susquehanna.

St. Lawrence closes out the weekend with a matchup against 14th-ranked Manhattanville tomorrow at 11 a.m., while the Crusaders will meet William Smith at 2 p.m.
