Heron field hockey moves up 3 spots
October 19 , 2004
GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith field hockey team moved up three spots in the Nation Field Hockey Coaches Association weekly coaches poll. On the strength of an 11-2 record, the Herons are seventh in the latest NFHCA poll, while undefeated Salisbury University remains No. 1.
William Smith suffered just its second loss of the season last Tuesday, falling to fifth-ranked Cortland, 5-2. The Herons rebounded on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over then-No. 13 Lebanon Valley College. With the win over LVC, William Smith improved to 4-2 against ranked opponents this season.
Sophomore forward Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) leads the team in goals and points and is second in assists. She has 13 goals and five assists for 31 points. Last season’s leading scorer as well, Dennis is already 15th on the College’s career points list (30-8-68) and is well on her way to becoming just the 10th Heron to record 100 career points.
Junior forward Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) is the team’s top playmaker with six assists, and ranks second in points (6-6-18).
Senior back Lea Desforges (Woodstock Union/Stockbridge, Vt.) anchors the William Smith defense which has allowed just 1.69 goals per game, while posting five shutouts.
The Herons return to action at 4 p.m., on Oct. 22, at Vassar (3-8, 1-4 Liberty). The following afternoon William Smith will close its regular season slate at 2 p.m., at Rensselaer (7-6, 4-1). Already assured of a spot in the conference’s postseason tournament, the Herons can lock up the top seed with a win over the second place Engineers on Saturday.
