Heron hockey shuts out Susquehanna, 2-0
September 19 , 2004
GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team scored a pair of goals in the opening 15 minutes to down visiting Susquehanna in the William Smith Invitational finale this afternoon at McCooey Field. The Herons finished the weekend 2-0, beating 14th-ranked Manhattanville, 3-1, yesterday.
After a couple dangerous chances early in the game by the Crusaders (2-3), the Herons got into a rhythm and found the back of the cage twice in a six minute span in the first session. Sophomore Lauren Fuller (Shaker/Loudonville, N.Y.) got things started in the 10th minute with a rifle of a shot into the cage on a penalty corner. Junior Amy Kuzio (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) and sophomore Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) assisted on the score.
Senior Lily Gillett (Wheeler School/Seekonk, Mass.) made it a 2-0 game six minutes later, using a couple nifty moves to get past defenders and knock home a shot from inside the circle for her first goal of the year.
Coming out of halftime with a 2-0 lead, the Herons (4-1) continued to dominate the action. William Smith maintained possession of the ball, allowing Susquehanna just one shot in the second frame. The Herons fired seven shots, but were unable to get on the board again, finishing the afternoon with a 2-0 victory.
William Smith outshot the Crusaders 13-6 and held a slight 7-6 advantage on penalty corners. Junior goalie Sue Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine) made four stops for the afternoon to earn her first shutout of the season, while Shannon Baker (Dover/Dover, Pa.) had eight saves in 70 minutes of action.
The Herons open Liberty League play in their next game, hosting St. Lawrence on Sept. 24, at 4 p.m.
