GENEVA, N.Y.—The 11th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team scored four straight first half goals to open an insurmountable lead on 13th-ranked Ithaca College at McCooey Field this afternoon. Led by the two-goal performance of junior Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.), the Herons won their seventh consecutive game with a 6-1 decision over the Bombers.
Sophomore Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) opened the scoring with a perfectly placed shot just seven minutes into the contest. Sophomore Brooke Atwood (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.) earned the assist.
Dolan added the first of her unassisted tallies in the 12th minute to register her second game-winner of the season.
Six minutes later, sophomore Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine) setup the Herons’ third strike. The defender sent a perfect pass to junior Amy Kuzio (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.), who turned and beat Bomber goalie Andrea Baraiola (Mark T. Sheehan/Wallingford, Conn.) to her left. A sophomore, Baraiola finished with 11 saves.
In the 23rd minute, Dolan raised William Smith’s advantage to 4-0 with a whistling shot from the just inside the circle.
Junior Natasha Snowden (Martha’s Vineyard/Maratha’s Vineyard, Mass.) put the Bombers on the board just 12 seconds before halftime, tipping home a shot by senior Brooke Aldrich (Oxford/Oxford, Mass.). It’s the sixth consecutive Ithaca goal Snowden has had a hand in after scoring four goals and assisting on the fifth in a 5-1 win over Nazareth on Saturday.
Juniors Lauren Fuller (Shaker/Loudonville, N.Y.) and Partricia Foster (Newton Country Day/Needham, Mass.) tallied second half goals to round out the scoring. A rocket that was a blur to all in attendance, Fuller’s tally was especially impressive.
In goal, junior Sue Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine) earned her eighth win of the season with a five-save performance.
William Smith returns to action at 4 p.m., on Oct. 8, at Union.
