Herons hold off Bombers in OT

ITHACA, N.Y.--Junior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) scored on a penalty stroke in overtime to lift ninth-ranked William Smith to a 3-2 victory at Ithaca College this afteroon in Division III field hockey action.

The Herons grabbed the early lead when junior Brooke Atwood (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the year in the contest's ninth minute. The tally proved to be the lone marker in the first half.

Less than three minutes after the break, senior Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) notched her 10th goal of the season to give William Smith a 2-0 lead. The Bomber stormed back with a pair of goals in the final 14 minutes to force overtime.

Nearly eight minutes into the the extra session, the Herons were awarded a penalty stroke that Dennis burried for her 10th goal of the season. The two points vaulted the Herons' leading scorer into fourth place on the all-time scoring list with 119 points, one ahead of Jackie Hall '02 and Nicky Livingston '02. It also moved her into a tie with Hall for fourth place on the career goals list (49).

In goal, senior Sue Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine) made six saves to earn her ninth win of the season.

William Smith (9-1) is back in action on Oct. 7, when the Herons host fourth ranked Skidmore (9-0) at 4 p.m. on McCooey Field.
