GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith field hockey team posted a 2-1 victory over visiting Geneseo State under the lights of McCooey Field tonight. Junior forward Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) tipped home what proved to be the game-winner in the 24th minute of play.
The Herons (1-0) dominated the flow of the game from the opening whistle. Senior forward Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) opened the scoring when she redirected a shot by senior back Lauren Fuller (Shaker/Loudonville, N.Y.) past Geneseo senior goalie Amanda Carver (Canastota/Canastota, N.Y.) at the 19:49 mark. Carver kept the Knights close with a spectacular 16-save performance.
Dennis gave the Herons a two-goal cushion 23:58 into the contest, tipping a drive by classmate Brooke Atwood (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.). William Smith led 2-0 and held a 15-0 advantage on shots at halftime.
After the break, the Herons continued their relentless pressure, but not before the Knights (0-1) made things interesting. Junior forward Erin Brown (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) finished a feed from classmate Karen Garnish (Eastridge/Rochester, N.Y.) at the 40:59 mark. The goal was one of only three shots Geneseo generated in the contest and the only one on goal.
William Smith finished the contest with a 30-3 margin in shots. The Herons have won eight in a row from the Knights.
William Smith is back in action at 2 p.m., on Sept. 3, when it hosts Messiah College.
