CANTON, N.Y.--Senior Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) scored three goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead the 10th-ranked William Smith field hockey team to its 24th consecutive regular season win over a Liberty League opponent. The Herons outlasted St. Lawrence 4-3.
Dolan gave William Smith (13-3, 7-0) the early lead, recording an unassisted goal less than eight minutes in, but the host Saints, who were fighting for one of the final two spots in the Liberty League Tournament, responded with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead into intermission.
Senior Lauren Fuller (Shaker/Loudonville, N.Y.) knotted the match at 2-all off a feed from junior Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine) at the 52-minute mark. Dolan, assisted by junior Brooke Atwood (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.) put the Herons on top 3-2 in the 69th minute, but St. Lawrence (7-5, 2-4) equalized with 1:39 remaining in regulation to force the extra session.
Dolan recorded her team-leading 17th goal of the year on a breakaway in the 82nd minute to give the Herons their third consecutive perfect regular season in the Liberty League.
William Smith clinched the top seed in the Liberty League Tournament, which starts Nov. 4, on Friday with a 4-1 win at Hamilton. The Herons will square off with No. 4 Union in one semifinal, while No. 2 Skidmore and No. 3 Rochester will tangle in the other semifinal. Game times will be announced next week.
William Smith will close out the regular season at home on Oct. 28, when the Herons host Nazareth College on McCooey Field at 4 p.m.
