GENEVA, N.Y.—The 11th-ranked William Smith field hockey team scored eight goals, the most by the program in over a decade, to close out the regular season with an 8-1 victory over Nazareth College on McCooey Field this afternoon. The offensive explosion is the most goals scored by a Heron team since William Smith dispatched Houghton College 9-0 on Sept. 2, 1994.
The Herons got hat tricks from senior Lauren Fuller (Shaker/Loudonville, N.Y.) and junior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.). Dennis also added an assist for a team-leading seven points, raising her career totals to 56 goals (4th on the all-time list), 24 assists (t-5th), and 136 points (3rd). She needs three more goals and six more points to match the career records set by Jennifer Joinnides ’97 (59-24-142).
William Smith (14-4) left little doubt about the outcome of this contest, scoring all six first half goals. Fuller netted all three of her markers before the break, while Dennis added two goals and an assist, senior Amy Kuzio (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) registered a goal and an assist, and senior Tara Baker (Rome Free Academy/Lee Center, N.Y.) contributed an assist in the first 35 minutes.
After the intermission, the Herons cooled off only slightly. Dennis logged her 17th goal of the season to give William Smith a 7-0 lead, and junior Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine), who assisted on Dennis’ 17th, scored a goal of her own.
Nazareth senior Ashley Decker (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.) broke up the shutout 56 minutes into the match on an assist from senior Margaret Van Horne (Gloversville/Gloversville, N.Y.).
Senior goalie Sue Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine), who played the first 50 minutes in the cage, made one save to card her 14th victory of the season. First-year Katie May (Irondequoit/Rochester, N.Y.) made 11 stops for Nazareth (1-14).
William Smith is back in action at 11 a.m. on Nov. 4 when the top-seeded Herons host No. 4 Union in the first semifinal of the Liberty League Tournament.
