Herons handle Roadrunners, 5-1

September 17 , 2005

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith field hockey team topped the Ramapo College Roadrunners 5-1 to kick off the Herons’ 2005 William Smith Tournament.

William Smith (4-1) allowed the Roadrunners (2-3) only two shots in the first half, both saved by senior goalie Sue Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine). She finished with five stops.

Senior forward Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) put the Herons ahead 1-0 the 20th minute with the assist going to senior defender Lauren Fuller (Shaker/Loudonville, N.Y.).

Junior forward Ashley Barker (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored her first goal of the season on an unassisted tally just five minutes into the second half. The third Heron goal of the game was set up six minutes later when Barker maneuvered the ball down the left side of the field to junior forward Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.), who continued to weave through Ramapo defenders and take a clean shot to the left of the junior goalie Katelyn Ferguson (Sussex/Sussex, N.J.).

A short time later, during the second penalty corner awarded to William Smith, Dolan scored her second goal of the game off of an assist from junior forward Brook Atwood (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.). The Herons scoring run ended with junior defender Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine) assisting Dennis' second goal of the game with thirteen minutes remaining.

The Roadrunners rallied to score their only goal off the game off of their last penalty corner with sophomore forward Amanda Wichnick (Middletown/Middletown, N.J.) putting in the tally.

William Smith is back in action on Sept. 18, at 2 p.m, when the Herons host the Susquehanna Crusaders on McCooey Field in the finale of the William Smith Tournament.
