GENEVA, N.Y.—The seventh-ranked William Smith College field hockey team shutout the Vassar Brewers 5-0 this afternoon in a Liberty League contest on McCooey Field. Junior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) led the Herons with seven points on three goals and an assist.

In the 13th minute, junior forward Ashley Barker assisted senior forwards Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) for the first Heron goal of the game. Seven minutes later, Dolan put in the second tally for William Smith (6-1, 2-0 Liberty), tipping a pass from forward Dennis. With nine minutes remaining in the opening stanza, Dennis drove the ball past Vassar first-year goalie Taylor Herman (Hunterdon Central/ Flemington, N.J).

In the second half, William Smith outshot the Brewers 13-1. First-year goalie Katie DeKraker (Wesport/Wesport, Conn.) saved the only Vassar (3-6, 0-2) shot on goal of the contest.

Barker made her second assist of the game, this time to Dennis, who knocked in the first goal of the second period. Just two minutes later, Dennis scored again off an assist from Dolan.

William Smith will be back in action on Sept. 28, at Rochester at 7 p.m.
