GENEVA, N.Y.—On the strength of a nine-game winning streak, the William Smith field hockey team moved into the top-10 of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association coaches poll. Sophomore forward Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.), the team’s leading scorer, was named the Rochester Area College Athletics Co-Female Athlete of the Week, following a two-goal, three assist-performance last week.

The Herons, who moved up one spot to No. 10, knocked off two ranked opponents in three games last week. William Smith (10-1, 5-0 Liberty League) topped then-No. 13 Ithaca 6-1 on Tuesday, blanked Union 4-0 on Friday, and closed out the week with a 2-1 win at then-No. 16 Skidmore. The road to a 17th consecutive postseason appearance doesn’t get any easier for the Herons. William Smith travels to fifth-ranked Cortland this afternoon, and returns home on Oct. 16, to tangle with No. 13 Lebanon Valley.

Dennis recorded a goal and an assist in the victories over the Bombers and the Dutchwomen, and assisted on the game-winner against the Thoroughbreds. She leads the team in points with 29 (12-5), and is second in the conference in both points (2.64 ppg) and goals (1.09 gpg).
