Herons upend 14th-ranked Manhattanville, 3-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College sophomore Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine). notched a pair of goals to lead the Herons to a 3-1 victory over 14th-ranked Manhattanville College in the opening game of the 2004 William Smith Field Hockey Invitational this afternoon.

Controlling play in the opening minutes, sophomore Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) put the Herons up 1-0 in the ninth minute, knocking the ball home after a flurry of shots. William Smith continued to dominate the action, firing 12 shots and holding the Valiants (3-1) to no shots in the first half, but were unable get past Manhattanville goalie April Yeomans (Lindenhurst, N.Y.).

Down by a goal heading into the second period, Manhattanville got a good opportunity early in the session, but Kelsey Verillo’s (Guilford, Conn.) shot was turned away by Heron goalie Sue Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine). Nearly 15 minutes later, Saucier made it a 2-0 score as her shot from inside the circle found the back of the cage.

Verillo made the game interesting five minutes later, firing a shot past Jordan to make it a one goal game again. Casey Chlominski (Franklin, N.J.) provided the assist. The Herons answered less than three minutes later to make it 3-1 when Saucier notched her second tally of the game with a shot from the top of the circle.

William Smith dominated Manhattanville in shots, holding a 26-4 advantage and won 12 penalty corners to the Valiants’ two.

Jordan made one stop on the afternoon for the Herons to garner her third win of the season, while Yeomans (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had 16 stops in 70 minutes of work.

William Smith returns to action on Sept. 19, hosting Susquehanna in the second day of the William Smith Invitational at 2 p.m.
