GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith was well represented on the 2004 All-Liberty League field hockey teams, announced today and voted on by the conference’s coaches. Led by Liberty League Coach of the Year Sally Scatton, the Herons garnered three first-team accolades, four second-team honorees, and three honorable mentions.

Senior back Lea Desforges (Woodstock Union/Stockbridge, Vt.), senior midfielder Sarah Silverio (Radnor/Villanova, Pa.), and sophomore forward Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) received first-team honors. Silverio and Dennis are both making their second consecutive appearance on the conference’s top team, while Desforges moved up after two previous second-team awards.

Senior forward Lily Gillett (Wheeler School/Seekonk, Mass.), junior forward Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.), junior midfielder Amy Kuzio (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.), and junior goalie Sue Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine) grabbed second-team praise, while junior back Lauren Fuller (Shaker/Loudonville, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder Brooke Atwood (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.), and sophomore back Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine) received honorable mention.

Scatton, along with assistants Missy Krempa, Lisa Kadien, and Warren Prestwich, led the fifth-ranked Herons (14-2, 7-0 Liberty) through the Liberty League regular season unscathed for the seventh time since the inception of the conference in 1995. She has guided the Herons to 17 consecutive winning seasons. The Herons are 4-2 against ranked teams this season with wins over then No. 14 Manhattanville, No. 13 Ithaca, No. 16 Skidmore, and No. 13 Lebanon Valley. Scatton has been named conference Coach of the Year five times.

A four-year starter for the Heron defense, Desforges anchored a back line that allowed just five goals in conference play this season. The William Smith defense has posted a League best seven shutouts this season. Desforges was selected to play in the NFHCA North-South All-Star Game.

A 2003 NFHCA second-team All-American, Silverio posted three assists in 11 games. The three-year starter earned the nod in 10 games this season, missing five due to illness. Widely respected for her complete play at both ends of the field, Silverio also was selected to play in the North-South game.

Last season’s Rookie of the Year, Dennis led the conference in goals and points, recording 16 goals and seven assists for 39 points. With just two seasons under her belt, she ranks 12th in career points and is on pace to become just the 10th Heron to compile 100 career points. Dennis matched her career-high with three goals in the season opener at Geneseo. In 36 career games, she has scored 33 goals, including seven game-winners, and 10 assists.

Gillett matched her career-high with six goals this season. She finished the regular season third on the team in goals and points (13). A three-year starter, Gillett boasts 20 career goals, including seven game-winners, and three career assists.

Dolan finished the regular season second on the team in goals (10), assists (6), and points (26). She ranks among the conference leaders in game-winning goals (2nd), assists (4th), goals (7th), and points (7th). Dolan posted a season-high four points five times this season. She was a 2003 NFHCA first-team All-North Atlantic selection.

Kuzio finished third on the team and 10th in the conference in assists with five. She recorded a season-high three points in wins over Oswego and Ithaca. Kuzio also earned a spot on the Liberty League second-team last season.

Jordan led the Liberty League in goals against average and recorded as many shutouts as any three Liberty League goalies combined. She posted a career-high 10 saves at Messiah and turned in an eight-save performance in a win at Skidmore.

Fuller is dual threat for William Smith, equally adept at shutting down an opposing offense and scoring for the Herons. Offensively, she has four goals and an assist this season, netting a pair of game-winning goals. Defensively, Fuller is a key figure in a swarming D that limited opponents to just 6.6 shots per game.

A starter in 13 games this season, Atwood sports three goals and two assists. She netted a career-high two goals in the team’s win over Rochester on Sept. 30.

Saucier is the Herons’ top scoring defender and ranks fourth on the team overall. She has logged 11 points (5-1) this year, including the game-winning goals against Oswego, Manhattanville, and Rochester.

William Smith will host the Liberty League championship tournament on Nov. 6-7. The Herons will tangle with fourth-seeded Skidmore in the first semifinal at 11 a.m., with No. 2 St. Lawrence and No. 3 Rensselaer to follow at 2 p.m. The winners will meet at 1 p.m., on Nov. 7.
