Messiah tops William Smith 4-2 in field hockey
September 3 , 2005
GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith field hockey team fell in an early hole and never fully recovered as the Herons dropped a 4-2 decision to visiting Messiah College on McCooey Field this afternoon. Senior forward Ashley Polet (Phillipsburg/Phillipsburg, Pa.) scored twice in the second half to provide the Falcons with the winning margin.
William Smith (1-1) faced an early deficit when senior forward Aftan Fisher (Pequea Valley/Gap, Pa.) and senior forward Jenna Schwind (Wilmington Christian/Wilmington, Del.) tallied unassisted goals before 10 minutes had run off the clock.
While Messiah (2-0) didn’t score again in the first half, the Falcons controlled the tempo, outshooting their hosts 10-3. Senior goalie Sue Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine) logged five of her nine saves in the opening stanza to keep the Herons close.
Junior forward Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) halved William Smith’s deficit, converting a penalty stroke 1:28 into the second half. Unfortunately for the Herons, Polet responded with back-to-back goals to give Messiah plenty of breathing room.
Senior back Lauren Fuller (Shaker/Loudonville, N.Y.) registered the final goal of the afternoon, blasting home a penalty corner with one second remaining. Senior Amy Kuzio (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) and Dennis were credited with assists on the play.
In goal for the Falcons, first-year Renee Herbster (Midd-West/Middleburg, Pa.) picked up the win with nine saves.
William Smith is back in action at 2 p.m., on Sept. 4, when Johns Hopkins University visits Geneva. The Blue Jays (1-1) also lost this afternoon, falling to Cortland State, 5-1.
