Saints sneak past Valiants, 4-3
September 19 , 2004
GENEVA, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University scored three goals in the second half this afternoon to sneak past Manhattanville College, 4-3, in the William Smith Field Hockey Invitational hosted by William Smith College. The Valiants went 1-1 for the weekend, losing to William Smith, 3-1, yesterday, while St. Lawrence goes home with a pair of victories after a 2-1 overtime win against Susquehanna on Saturday.
After a lot of back and forth action in the opening 15 minutes of the game, the Saints struck first when they were awarded a penalty stroke in the 17th minute. Sophomore Eliza Matthews (Hall-Dale/Randolph, Maine) stepped up to the ball and fired it high into the cage for a 1-0 St. Lawrence lead.
Just over 10 minutes later Manhattanville first-year Harriet Hoyer (Hamburg Germany) knocked home a shot to even the score going into the halftime break.
The second half proved to be an entertaining one, featuring five goals and a missed penalty stroke. The Saints’ Ali Mattison (Tabor/Osterville, Mass.) got things started in the 38th minute tipping in a penalty corner shot from Tiffany Elsenbeck (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.). Five minutes later, Erin Lloyd (Corinth/Corinth, N.Y.) made it a two-goal game, 3-1, on an unassisted score from the left side of the cage.
Manhattanville responded in the 45th minute when Alissa Tyghter (North Haven, Conn.) tapped in Danielle Lacroix (Richmond, British Columbia) shot to make it a 3-2 game. That would be as close as the Valiants would get as sophomore Erin Mellow (Lebanon/Grantham, N.H.) tallied the Saints’ fourth and final goal of the game in the 50th minute.
Junior midfielder Dionne Jones (Wind Gap, Pa.) closed out the game’s scoring in the 55th minute with an unassisted goal, but it wasn’t enough for the 14th-ranked Valiants.
St. Lawrence had a 19-15 advantage in shots, while both teams won 10 penalty corners. In goal, Emilie Lannamann (Proctor Academy/Durham, N.H.) made 10 stops for the Saints, while senior April Yeomans (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had 11 stops, including a save on a penalty stroke in the second half for Manhattanville.
