GENEVA, N.Y.—For the second straight year, William Smith College Field Hockey Head Coach Sally Scatton was named the New York State Coach of the Year in a vote of the member coaches of the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association.

In her 18th season at the helm of the Herons, Scatton led her charges to a 17-4 overall record, including a 7-0 mark in the Liberty League. William Smith finished atop the conference regular season standings and won the tournament championship. In the NCAA Division III Tournament, the Herons advanced to the quarterfinal round for the 13th time in 15 trips under Scatton’s watchful eye.

In 2006, Scatton will begin the season on the cusp of a major coaching milestone, 300 wins. Her career record stands at 295-79-3 (.786). Scatton ranks fifth in Division III in career winning percentage.

An outstanding mentor, she has developed dozens of All-Americans and eight Liberty League Players of the Year, including two-time All-American, 2005 Liberty League Player of the Year, and William Smith’s all-time leading scorer, junior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.).

A three-time NFHCA National Coach of the Year, Scatton has led William Smith to three national championships and was instrumental in the Herons’ successful bid to host the 2006 NCAA Division III Championship on McCooey Field.

A 1975 graduate of Ithaca College, Scatton played four years of field hockey and lacrosse and three years of basketball, earning the school’s Senior Woman Athlete of the Year award. In 1997, she was inducted into the college’s sports hall of fame. Scatton earned a master’s degree in education from Cortland in 1981.
