Strong first-half leads Ursinus of Maine-Farmington
November 13 , 2004
GENEVA, N.Y.—The Ursinus College field hockey team tallied three first-half goals to earn a 3-0 win over University of Maine at Farmington this afternoon in an NCAA Regional Semifinal match. The third-ranked Bears advance to the regional final against fifth-ranked William Smith tomorrow afternoon.
Ursinus (20-1) knocked home its first shot of the game 4:19 into the half when sophomore forward Molly Stevens (Lower Dauphin/Hummelstown, Pa.) redirected a Kristen Pearson (Upper Merion/Bridgeport, Pa.) pass for a 1-0 lead.
The Bears continued to put the pressure on the Beavers, but did not add a second score until senior defender Joyce Koubaroulis (Cox/Virginia Beach, Va.) blasted a shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner in the 25th minute. Stevens provided the assist on the goal.
Pinning UMF (15-6) in its own end for the majority of the opening 35 minutes, Ursinus put the game away for good with 1:20 left in the half on a goal by Lindsay Cappa (Oley/Oley, Pa.).
The Bears dominated the Beavers 15-0 in the shots column and held an 8-0 edge in penalty corners in the first session.
Coming out of the break, the Ursinus defense continued to stifle any attack from UMF, allowing the Beavers just one shot and one penalty corner for the game. UMF goalkeeper Ashleigh Biette (Freeport, Maine), however kept the Bears out of her cage, making eight saves in the second half.
Outshooting the Beavers 29-1 for the match, Ursinus had 18 penalty corners. Biette grabbed 15 saves in 70 minutes of action, while Bears’ first-year goalie Jessica Lamina (Central Bucks West/Doylestown, Pa.) had one stop.
Ursinus will match up with William Smith (17-2) in the NCAA Regional Final on Nov. 13, at 1 p.m., on McCooey Field. The winner advances to the NCAA Semifinals at Westfield State on Nov. 20-21.
