William Smith takes sting out of Rochester, 4-1
September 30 , 2004
GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team remained unblemished in Liberty League play following a 4-1 victory over the University of Rochester this evening at McCooey Field. Sophomore Brooke Atwood (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.) led the charge with a pair of goals.
The 14th ranked Herons (7-1, 3-0 Liberty) wasted little time getting on the board, as Atwood batted home a rebound less than two minutes into the match.
The Yellowjackets (6-3, 2-1) struggled to generate an offensive push until late in the opening frame. On Rochester’s first trip into the Herons’ defensive zone, a Yellowjacket sent a shot on a shallow angle toward the cage that ricocheted off of junior goalie Sue Jordan’s (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine) pads and went right to the stick of sophomore Krista Butler (Carmel/Carmel, N.Y.). Butler simply tapped the rebound home to even the match in the 31st minute.
Jordan settled in after the break, making three saves to earn the win.
On a penalty corner midway through the second half, sophomore Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine) dribbled around two defenders and sent a blast from the right side past Rochester keeper Rachel Cahan (North Shore Country Day/Evanston, Ill.) for what proved to be the game-winner.
Cahan finished with 13 saves.
Atwood and junior Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) added insurance goals in the 55th and 67th minutes, respectively.
The Herons outshot the Yellowjackets 29-8, while holding a 19-4 advantage on penalty corners.
William Smith returns to action at 4 p.m., on Oct. 5, when Ithaca visits McCooey Field.
