September 21 , 2004
GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team debuted at No. 17 in this week’s National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Coaches Poll. The Herons are riding a three-game win streak heading into this weekend’s Liberty League contests with St. Lawrence and Hamilton.
Last weekend, William Smith (4-1) hosted its annual invitational, squaring off with then 14th-ranked Manhattanville and Susquehanna. The Herons dispatched the Valiants 3-1 on Saturday and blanked the Crusaders, 2-0, on Sunday.
Sophomore Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) leads the team in scoring with six goals and two assists. Sophomore defender Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine) is the reigning Liberty League Defensive Player of the Week, after notching a pair of goals and anchoring a one-goal defensive effort.
William Smith begins conference play at 4 p.m., on Sept. 24, when the Saints (4-2) visit McCooey Field. The following afternoon at 2 p.m., the Continentals (0-3) will tangle with the Herons on McCooey Field.
