Field hockey Herons hold steady at No. 7

September 20 , 2005

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team remained at No. 7 in the STX/NFHCA coaches poll for the second week in a row. The Herons posted a pair of wins over the weekend, defeating Ramapo 5-1, and Susquehanna 2-0 to improve to 5-1 overall.

The big story out of the weekend’s action was the play of Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.). The junior forward scored seven points in two games and became just the 10 Heron to surpass the 100-point plateau. In 47 career games, she has scored 44 goals (sixth all-time) and 17 assists (13th) for 105 points (tied for 7th). She was named the Liberty League Co-Offensive Performer of the Week and the Rochester Area College Athletics Co-Female Athlete of the Week.

With five goals and five assists this season, Dennis leads the Liberty League in assists and points and is tied for second in goals.

William Smith returns to action at 4 p.m., on Sept. 23, when the Herons host Rensselaer (3-1) on McCooey Field in the Liberty League opener for both teams.
