GENESEO, N.Y.—The William Smith field hockey team, led by senior Ashley Barker (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine), produced its first win of the season this afternoon, defeating Geneseo State 4-1. Barker gave the Herons (1-1) all of the offensive they would need, scoring the first two goals of the contest and earning the assist on the third.
The match was scoreless through the first 20 minutes, but Barker registered back-to-back scores in the 21st and 27th minutes to give William Smith a 2-0 lead. Senior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) scored in the 29th minute to send the Herons into the half with a 3-0 lead. Dennis, already the school’s all-time leader in goals and points, finished the game with a goal and two assists, moving within 10 of the Heron career assists record.
Junior Brittney Paye (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) made it 4-0 late in the second half, making the Blue Knights late tally little more than a footnote.
William Smith is back in action at 2 p.m. on Sept. 9, when the Herons host Oswego State on McCooey Field.
