CORTLAND, N.Y.—The seventh-ranked William Smith field hockey team had its 11-game winning streak snapped by No. 3 Cortland, 1-0, this afternoon. The Herons slip to 11-2, while the Red Dragons improve to 12-0.
Kelli Johnson scored in the fifth minute of play as Cortland got off to a fast start. The Red Dragons outshot their guests 7-2 in the opening half, but settled for the one-goal advantage at the break.
The pendulum swung the other way in the second half, as the Herons posted a 7-2 advantage in shots, but William Smith could not equalize. The Herons had several quality scoring chances, sending one shot just outside the post, striking another that hit the post, and yet another that was kicked away by the Cortland goalie in the final minute.
Sophomore Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) recorded six saves for William Smith, while her counterpart, Stacy Billings registered five stops.
The Herons are back in action on Oct. 14, when No. 11 Lebanon Valley visits McCooey Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
