GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith senior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) scored three straight goals to lead the Heron field hockey team to a 5-1 victory over visiting Oswego State on McCooey Field. Her sixth career hat trick helped William Smith to its fourth win in as many matches against the Lakers.
The Herons (2-1) opened the scoring at the 10 minute mark, when senior Ashley Barker (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) finished a scramble in front of the Oswego cage for her fourth goal of the season. Dennis tallied her first 14 minutes later to make it a 2-0 game and scored less than four minutes into the second half for a 3-0 advantage.
In the 51st minute, Dennis converted a penalty stroke to put William Smith up four. Fifteen minutes later, first-year Nadine Gutkin (Rondout Valley/Accord, N.Y.) closed out the Herons’ scoring with her first career goal. Classmate Juliet Leeming (Bishop Brady/Canterbury, N.H.) earned the assist.
Oswego finally broke through the Heron defense in the 66th minute when senior Jennifer Tordy (Akron/Akron, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season.
Laker senior goalie Kaitlin Daniels (Pierson/Sag Harbor, N.Y.) finished a busy afternoon with 15 saves, while William Smith sophomore Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) earned the win with a single save.
The Herons, who began an eight-match homestand today, are back in action on Sept. 16, when they host Ramapo at 11 a.m. in the first match of the William Smith Tournament.
