Dennis chosen for NFHCA Senior All-Star Game

November 13, 2006

Sophie Dennis

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) is one of 38 field hockey players chosen to participate in the 2006 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Senior All-Star Game. A home game for the Herons’ career scoring leader, the contest will be played on William Smith’s McCooey Field at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 18. Admission to the contest is free.

A two-time first-team All-American and two-time Liberty League Player of the Year, Dennis holds the William Smith career records for goals (89), assists (39), and points (217). She led the Liberty League in both goals and points and ranked in the top five in the nation goals, assists, and points.

“When most people think of Sophie they think of her scoring records and the long list of awards she’s won, but what really distinguishes her from everyone else is her leadership, her work ethic, and her commitment to the entire team,” Heron Head Coach Sally Scatton said.

A once-in-a-generation type player, Dennis had more points this season (70) than two of the teams in the Liberty League, breaking the William Smith single season record of 67 (by Kimberly O’Gorman) that had served as the program’s benchmark since 1987. Dennis was named the Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week six times this season.

With three consecutive 50-point seasons, Dennis is one of only two Herons to eclipse the 50-point plateau and the only one to do so more than once.

Over the past four seasons, Dennis and her classmates have led William Smith to a record of 67-17 record, four consecutive first place finishes in the Liberty League standings, three conference tournament championships, and four straight postseason berths.

The ninth-ranked Herons earned their 17th NCAA Tournament bid, advancing to the quarterfinal round with wins over Eastern University, 4-1, and Middlebury College, 2-1, before falling to third-ranked Bowdoin College, 3-1.

In addition to hosting the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game, William Smith College will also host the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Semifinals and Championship, Nov. 17-18. No. 8 Ursinus (19-3) will face No. 6 Lebanon Valley (20-2) in the first semifinal at 11 a.m., with No. 5 Messiah (17-4) taking on Bowdoin (17-1). The winners will meet for the national championship at 1 p.m. on Nov. 18.

NCAA tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens, and $2 for children 12 and under. All tickets are single day tickets.
