GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) and sophomore Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) were named the Liberty League Field Hockey Offensive and Defensive Performers of the Week, respectively, after leading the Herons to their third consecutive conference tournament championship over the weekend.
Dennis scored four goals, including both game-winners, to lead William Smith to the title. Her eight points raised her season total to 67, tying the William Smith single season record, while her 214 career points tie her for 10th in Division III history.
Dennis leads the conference in goals (27) and points and trails only classmate Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine) in assists (15-13).
DeKraker made five saves in goal to earn the conference crown in her first season as a starter. She had two saves in the 4-1 win over Rensselaer and three in the 2-1 championship victory against St. Lawrence.
In the Liberty League, DeKraker ranks first in minutes played (1323:29) and second in goals against average (1.16).
William Smith (16-3) is back in action at 4 p.m. on Nov. 8, when the Herons host Eastern University (17-4) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.
