GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-America first team for the third consecutive season. She is the Herons’ all-time leader and ranks 10th in Division III history in career points (218).

Dennis led the Liberty League and broke the William Smith season record for points with 70. She was named the Liberty League Player of the Year in 2005 and again in 2006. The four-time All-Liberty League selection also holds the Heron career records for goals (89) and assists (39). Dennis bested the previous mark by one assist (38 by Nicky Livingston ’01), 30 goals (59 by Jennifer Joinnides ’97), and an amazing 75 points (142 by Joinnides).

Dennis was third in the nation in points per game (3.18), sixth in goals per game (1.27), and 12th in assists per game (0.64) this season.

Over the past four seasons, Dennis earned a weekly award from the Liberty League 15 times, including six Offensive Performer of the Week honors in 2006. She recorded a career-high eight points on three goals and two assists against Ramapo College on Sept. 16, 2006. It was one of nine hat tricks Dennis produced during her collegiate career.

An exceptionally clutch performer, Dennis also broke the William Smith career record for game-winning goals with 17. Jackie Hall ’01 was the previous standard-bearer with 16.

During Dennis’ career, the Herons were 67-17, including a 27-1 mark in the Liberty League. She and her classmates led William Smith to four straight Liberty League regular season titles and three consecutive Liberty League Tournament crowns. In three NCAA Tournament appearances, Dennis and the Herons advanced to the semifinals in 2004 and reached the quarterfinals in 2005 and 2006.
