GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith senior forward Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) was named the Liberty League Field Hockey Offensive Performer of the Week for the second straight week. She scored three goals and posted three assists in a 2-0 weekend for the 12th-ranked Herons.
In a 5-1 win over Ramapo on Saturday, Dennis had a hand in all five William Smith goals and tied the school record for points in a game, posting three goals and two assists for eight points. The total ties a record now shared by six different Herons. No William Smith player has scored that many points in a game since Oct. 12, 1996 (Jennifer Joinnides ’97 vs. Skidmore). The following afternoon, Dennis recorded an assist in a 5-0 win over Susquehanna.
Through five games, the two-time first-team All-American leads the Liberty League in total goals (8), assists (6), and points (22) as well as average goals (1.60/g), assists (1.20), and points (4.40).
Dennis’ current scoring pace is nearly one and a half points better than the Heron single season record (2.91 by Kimberly O’Gorman ’88 in 1987). Already William Smith’s career leader in goals (69) and points (169), she is just seven assists shy of that career record (38 by Nicky Livingston ’02).
The Herons (4-1) open Liberty League play on Sept. 22, when Hamilton visits McCooey Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
