GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) was recently named the Rochester Area College Athletics Field Hockey Athlete of the Year for the third straight year. A forward, Dennis led the Herons to an 18-4 overall record this season, a third consecutive trip to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament, and a third straight Liberty League Championship.

A three-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-American and 2006 womensfieldhockey.com first-team All-American, Dennis holds the William Smith records for career points (217), career goals (89), and career assists (39). She also owns the record for points in a season with 70, after tallying 28 goals and 14 assists this fall. She was named the ECAC Division III Player of the Year, and the Liberty League Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Additionally, Dennis ranks in the top 10 in Division III history for career points. She led the Liberty League in goals each of her four seasons, and played an integral role in leading the Herons to a 67-17 overall record and a 27-1 conference mark over the past four years. The four-time All-State, All-Liberty League, and NFHCA All-Region pick ranked third in the country this season in points per game (3.18).
