GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College junior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) was presented with a legislative resolution by New York State Sen. Michael Nozzolio, R-54 of Fayette, this afternoon. Over the past three years, Dennis has compiled an exceptional resume, earning All-American honors in field hockey, while excelling in the classroom.

In addition to listing Dennis’ many accomplishments, the resolution read, “be it resolved that this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to congratulate William Smith College student-athlete Sophie Dennis upon the occasion of being named to the 2005 Dartfish/National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-America Team.”

The 2005 Liberty League Player of the Year, Dennis led the conference in goals (22), assists (13), and points (57). Her points total is the second highest single season mark in Heron history. The two-time first-team All-American is William Smith’s career goals and points leader with 61 tallies and 25 helpers for 147 points. Dennis is also a three-time NFHCA All-North Atlantic selection.

A sports in society major with a minor in economics, Dennis has been named to the NFHCA All-Academic squad twice.

The resolution also praised the efforts of William Smith Head Coach Sally Scatton.

“Whereas, Coach Sally Scatton has done a superb job in guiding, molding and inspiring Sophie Dennis toward her goals; and

“Whereas, Sports competition instills the values of teamwork, pride and accomplishment, and Coach Sally Scatton and Sophie Dennis have clearly made a contribution to the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of their school.”

In the fall, Scatton will welcome back a veteran squad, including Dennis, as William Smith seeks its fourth national championship. The Herons will have the added incentive to play the semifinal and championship games on their own turf, McCooey Field. The NCAA accepted William Smith’s bid to host the 2006 Division III Championships on Nov. 18 and Nov. 19.
