POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The ninth-ranked William Smith field hockey team extended its winning streak to 11 games with a 4-0 decision at Liberty League rival Vassar. Senior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) tied the Heron career record for assists, matching Nicky Livingston’s 38.
Senior Brooke Atwood (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.) stole the spotlight, notching a game-high five points on two goals and an assist, while Dennis—already William Smith’s career leader in goals and points—chipped in a goal and an assist.
Atwood gave the Herons (11-1) the lead in the 30th minute, scoring an unassisted goal from the top of the circle. William Smith led 1-0 at the half.
The visitors expanded their lead with three quick goals to start the second half. Dennis finished a feed in the 37th minute and returned the favor 1:41 later. The goal, Atwood’s sixth of the season, was a lift on a penalty corner and gave Dennis a share of the record. Senior Ashley Barker (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) capped the scoring with a goal assisted by first-year Kaitlyn Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.).
Dennis raised her career totals to 81 goals and 38 assists for 200 points. Fewer than 20 Division III field hockey players have reached that lofty milestone.
Sophomore goalie Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) earned her third shutout of the season with one save.
William Smith will travel to No. 3 Cortland on Oct. 11. The regional rivals will square off at 4:30 p.m.
