GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith senior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) was named the Liberty League Field Hockey Co-Offensive Performer of the Week and the Rochester Area College Athletics Tri-Female Athlete of the Week after leading the Herons to three wins last week. William Smith extended its winning streak to 11 games and jumped up two spots in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III poll to No. 7.
Dennis recorded 11 points (5-1) at the expense of Ithaca, Rensselaer, and Vassar. She led the then ninth-ranked Herons to their ninth consecutive win with her ninth career hat trick against the Bombers. Dennis added another score in William Smith’s 2-1 win at Rensselaer. She closed the week with a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win over Vassar and in the process tied the Heron career assists record (38) and became the first William Smith field hockey player to reach the 200-point plateau (81-38-200).
Dennis is just the 17th player in Division III history to score 200 career points. She leads the Liberty League in goals (20), assists (12), and points (52) this season, sporting more than twice as many points as the next player in the rankings.
With five games remaining in the regular season, Dennis is three assists shy of the single season mark (15 by Nicky Livingston ’02), 10 goals shy of that season record (30 by Kimberly O’Gorman ’88), and 15 points shy of that standard (67 by O'Gorman).
The Herons’ (11-1) next match, at No. 3 SUNY Cortland (11-0), is on Oct. 11, at 4:30 p.m. Both teams will bring an 11-match winning streak into the contest. William Smith has not beaten the Red Dragons since a 2-0 triumph in Cortland on Oct. 16, 2002.
