Herons 12th in NFHCA poll

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith field hockey team is ranked 12th in the first National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll of the season. The Herons were ranked as high as seventh in 2005 before settling in at No. 11 in the final NFHCA poll of the year.

Through the first three games of 2006, William Smith is 2-1 overall with the lone loss coming at the hands of second-ranked Messiah. The Herons will square off with three more teams ranked in the NFHCA top-20, No. 5 Cortland (Oct. 11), No. 9 Lebanon Valley (Oct. 14), and No. 14 Skidmore (Oct. 20).

Senior forward Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) leads the team and the Liberty League in goals (5) and points (13), while classmate Ashley Barker (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) has contributed four goals and an assist for nine points.

William Smith returns to action on Sept. 16, when the Herons host Ramapo at 11 a.m. on McCooey Field. The match is the first of the annual William Smith Tournament. St. Lawrence and Susquehanna will battle in the second match at 2 p.m.

On Sept. 17, the Saints and the Roadrunners will square off at 11 a.m., with the Herons taking on the Crusaders at 2 p.m.
