GENEVA, N.Y.—The 12th-ranked William Smith field hockey team won its fourth consecutive game this afternoon, shutting out visiting Susquehanna University 5-0 in the finale of the William Smith Field Hockey Classic. Senior Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine) scored twice to pace the Herons.
William Smith (4-1) carried the play throughout the contest, outshooting the Crusaders 25-2. The Herons also sported a 15-4 advantage on penalty corners.
Senior Brooke Atwood (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.) opened the scoring on a penalty corner in the ninth minute, lifting a high-arching shot over the Susquehanna goalie. Senior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) and sophomore Kelsey Landahl (Pioneer/Delevan, N.Y.) earned assists on the play. In the 28th minute, first-year Kaitlyn Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.) made it a 2-0 game, finishing a feed from classmate Sarah Palmer (Friends School/Baltimore, Md.).
Senior Ashley Barker (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) opened the second half scoring just 24 seconds into the session. Saucier knocked home the final two Heron goals to cement the team’s first shutout of the season.
William Smith goalies sophomore Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) and first-year Lizzie Sullivan (Haverford/Bryn Mawr, Pa.) did not face a shot, while sophomore Lyndsay Meabon (Northern/Dillsburg, Pa.) recorded 13 saves for Susquehanna (2-4).
The Herons are back in action on Sept. 22, when they host Hamilton College at 4 p.m.
