GENEVA, N.Y.—The 11th-ranked William Smith field hockey team won its Liberty League opener 6-1 over Hamilton College this afternoon and in the process gave Head Coach Sally Scatton the 300th win of her career. Now in her 19th season, Scatton is just the eighth Division III field hockey coach to reach that milestone.

There was very little drama in Scatton’s big win. First-year Kaitlyn Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.) deflected a shot by senior Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine) past the Continentals’ goalie just 28 seconds into the match. Saucier, who finished with a goal and two assists, registered her score in the 23rd minute to make it a 2-0 lead. Senior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) scored two minutes later to make it a 3-0 game.
The Continentals (1-4, 0-1) cracked the scoring column just 15 seconds before halftime when senior Kerry Leonard (Stamford, Conn.) found the back of the cage.
The second half was all Herons. Seniors Ashley Barker (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine), Dennis, and Brooke Atwood (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.) recorded goals.
Dennis led all scorers with six points (2-2), while Atwood added a goal and an assist.
In goal, sophomore Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) earned the win with four saves while four of her teammates chipped in with defensive saves. For Hamilton, first-year Courtney DeMaria (Groton School/Littleton, Mass.) finished with 10 saves.
William Smith (5-1, 1-0) is back in action on Sept. 23, when the Herons host St. Lawrence at 2 p.m.
