Skidmore ends William Smith’s streak at 29

October 20, 2006

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The No. 8 William Smith field hockey team saw its 29-game regular season winning streak against Liberty League foes end this afternoon. No. 19 Skidmore (10-4, 4-2) scored on a penalty corner with less than five minutes remaining in the match to hand the Herons (12-3, 5-1) their first Liberty League regular season loss since Oct. 11, 2002. Coincidentally, that match was also at Skidmore, a 4-1 decision in favor of the Thoroughbreds.

Sophomore Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) made four saves in goal for the Herons.

William Smith is now just a half game ahead of second place St. Lawrence (8-4, 4-1). The Saints’ match against Rensselaer was postponed due to snow in Canton. The Herons can clinch their fourth consecutive Liberty League regular season title with a win at Union on Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. The Dutchwomen (9-5, 3-3) defeated Rochester this afternoon 1-0.
