GENEVA, N.Y.—The 10th-ranked William Smith field hockey team won its eighth consecutive game tonight, defeating visiting Elmira College 7-2 in a non-conference match. Senior Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) scored twice and notched a career-high three assists to lead the Herons.

Dennis, who already holds the William Smith career records for goals and points, appeared destined to add the third jewel to her crown before the end of the night. She started the match with 34 career assists, four shy of the record set by Nicky Livingston ’02.

Dennis set up three goals in the first 15 minutes of the match to move within one of that career mark. First-year Kaitlyn Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.) scored the first two and senior Brooke Atwood (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.) notched the game-winner.

Sophomore Katie Mancuso (Harpursville/Port Crane, N.Y.) found classmate Kelsey Landahl (Pioneer/Delevan, N.Y.) to give the Herons a 4-0 advantage heading into halftime.

William Smith (8-1) outshot Elmira 13-1 in the first half and 23-6 for the game.

In the second half, Dennis scored her 14th and 15th goals of the season to raise her season point total to 42, ninth on the single season list (15 behind that record). Heron senior Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine) also added a second half goal, while Elmira (2-4) got late goals from senior Jess Zegarelli (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) and sophomore Kayla Blank (Whitesboro/Whitesboro, N.Y.).

In goal, sophomore Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) made one save and allowed one goal in 59 minutes, while first-year Lizzie Sullivan (Haverford/Bryn Mawr, Pa.) made three stops against one goal in relief. For the Soaring Eagles, senior Ann Phillips (Lancaster/Lancaster, N.Y.) faced 20 shots and made 13 saves in 63 minutes.

William Smith closes out its eight-game home stand on Oct. 3, when the Herons host Ithaca College at 5 p.m.
