12 Herons cited for academic excellence

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team recently named a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) 2006 Division III National Academic Team. The Herons earned the distinction after posting a team grade point average of 3.36 during the fall semester.

Additionally, 12 Herons were honored individually by the NFHCA for their excellence in the classroom. The National Academic Squad program recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.3 through the first semester of the 2006-07 academic year.

William Smith recorded its 19th consecutive winning season under Head Coach Sally Scatton, posting an 18-4 overall mark. The Herons finished atop the conference standings for the fourth consecutive season and won their third straight Liberty League Tournament Championship. In the NCAA Tournament, William Smith advanced to the quarterfinal round for the third season in a row.
