GENEVA, N.Y.—Four William Smith College field hockey players were named to the 2002 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III All-Star teams. Seniors Brigid Lynch (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.), Sheila McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.), Neely Wakeman (Holderness School/Cohasset, Mass.), and Erin Weir (Blair Academy/Califon, N.J.) all garnered second-team accolades.

The ECAC awards are the latest in a long list of honors for the Heron hockey program this season. William Smith, boasting a 21-player roster with eight first-years and five sophomores, posted a 14-6 regular season record, including victories in 10 of the team’s last 12 games of the regular season. The Herons finished second in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association and were the runner-up of the UCAA Tournament. William Smith also received a berth in the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Tournament, falling in the quarterfinals in overtime.

A defender, Lynch helped hold opponents to just over a goal per game (1.30), while adding four goals and an assist to the Heron offense. A four-year starter, she completed her career with nine points (4-1) and three defensive saves. Lynch is also a first-team All-UCAA and first-team NFHCA All-Region selection.

A forward, McKevitt is one of the most prolific goal scorers in school history. William Smith’s leading scorer with 14 goals and six assists, she ranks fifth on the Herons’ career goals list (43), 11th in assists (18), and seventh in points (104). McKevitt was named the 2002 UCAA Player of the Year and an NFHCA first-team All-American.

A defender, Wakeman was an important part of the William Smith attack. Boasting just four goals in 24 career games prior to this season, she exploded for 11 goals and 10 assists in 21 games. Wakeman also was named to the 2002 All-UCAA first-team.

A midfielder, Weir recorded a goal and a team-high 13 assists this season to end her career with 13 goals and 18 assists. Of her 13 goals, seven were game-winners, including the decisive tally in the 2000 NCAA Division III Championship game. An NFHCA second-team All-American, Weir, along with McKevitt, was selected to play in the annual North-South All-Star Game.
